IVIG pregnancy treatment

IVIG  (intravenous immunoglobulin) is a relatively new treatment whereby the plasma from over 1,000 blood donors is given to a patient as an intravenous transfusion. The treatment can result in positive effects which generally last up to 3-4 weeks.

Doctors have established that the technique can be an effective treatment in a wide range of medical circumstances, including;

  • in women where traditional IVF has failed, due to immune system factors which prevented the body from accepting the embryo
  • for conditions relating to immune deficiencies and autoimmune diseases
  • to prevent miscarriage in women with immunological problems

IVIG as Fertility Treatment

Doctors believe that the reason IVIG can be used in fertility treatment is that some women have over-active immune systems, and this can result in rejection of an implanted embryo following IVF, or even in miscarriages for women who have conceived naturally.

IVIG can be used to increase chances that the body accepts an implanted embryo, or does not reject a naturally occurring embryo. This can be effective for women who have not been successful with traditional IVF, as well as for women who are in the older age bracket.

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) transfusions consist of blood products which are made up of antibodies. These antibodies can have a positive effect on the faulty immune system.

How does IVIG help with Fertility?

IVIG works in a number of ways to increase chances of a successful conception and pregnancy:

  1. It is a potent suppressor of Natural Killer (NK) cells. NK cells make up in excess of 80% of the white blood cells  in the uterine lining, and produce local hormones known as TH-1 cytokines. Uncontrolled, excessive release of TH-1 cytokines can result in failed implantation.
  2. It contains anti-idiotype antibodies which work against harmful antibodies, and so protect the embryo/fetus from rejection.
  3. IVIG deactivates active T-cells and polyclonal B-cells that may be a factor in poor reproductive performance due to antithyroid antibodies
